Ayuso defends her "freedom" to demonstrate and rejects a "plurinational" Spain.

He asserts that co-official languages are a "wealth," but criticizes their use to "divide." He rejects "interventionism" in housing and sees the government at a dead end.

The conference of presidents held this Friday in Barcelona ended earlier than planned, and instead of reaching agreements, the meeting served to highlight the extent of division and confrontation among the various institutional leaders.

Madrid's president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso , has demanded that general elections be called as soon as possible, in response to a government she sees as exhausted. It's the same message that the other representatives of her party, the People's Party , have conveyed.

Díaz Ayuso was highly critical of the use of co-official languages at the meeting, as she believed the goal was to reflect that Spain is "plurinational," not a single "nation." Thus, linguistic "wealth" is being used to "divide," something that is also being promoted through amnesty and debt forgiveness for the autonomous communities.

"It pains me to the core to pay for the independence celebration," said Díaz Ayuso, who asserted that Spain is experiencing an "institutional crisis" with a government that is not implementing measures included in its platform, but is instead "in the hands of minorities," referring to the separatists.

'No' to "interventionism" in housing

In statements to the media, the Madrid leader also lamented that the government's proposal to address rising housing prices consists of delegating its responsibilities to the autonomous regions and insisting on "interventionism," which, in her opinion, will only "exaggerate" the problem.

"What should be done is to encourage housing construction," and instead, the government's proposal contributes to "encouraging occupations and unrest ," reduces the rental market, and also imposes financial obligations on the autonomous regions , when they have "limited" structural spending.

Díaz Ayuso was one of the main protagonists of the conference of presidents, as she stood up from the room when the Catalan president, Salvador Illa , and the lehendakari, Imanol Pradales , spoke in Catalan and Basque.

The Popular Party leader asserted that it makes no sense to use earpieces when speaking to everyone in the corridors in Spanish. She also stated that she rejects "hypocrisy," which is why she didn't see fit to greet the Minister of Health, Mónica García , with two kisses following criticism from her party, Más Madrid, over the management of nursing homes during Covid-19. Therefore, she saw fit to shake her hand, as she did with other attendees.
